With Gooned-Up Flower Vase I was trying to emulate some gel pen drawings I completed in 2016. The restrictive colour palette was inspired by an African plant called the Kaffir Lily, or Clivia Miniata which yellows in open and sunny positions.
I have been exploring tonal graduations to create a sea of forms within the picture plane—with surprising results—reminding me of the cubist paintings of Picasso and Braque.
